A workshop with Richard Skinner

Monday 21st October 2013, 7pm-9pm

Blackwell’s Bookshop, Oxford

Richard Skinner, Director of the Fiction Programme at the Faber Academy and a tutor on its six-month ‘Writing a Novel’ course, will be running a two-hour workshop from 7pm to 9pm on Monday 21st October  at Blackwell’s Bookshop.

This brief introduction to novel writing will cover some of the basics principles and tools needed to complete a fully fledged work. In particular, there will be three key areas of focus:

  • A look at how to use ‘free indirect style’
  • An exercise on editing
  • An explanation of how to carry out a ‘stress test’ on your plots

Richard Skinner is the author of three novels, all published by Faber & Faber. The Red Dancer has been translated into seven languages. The Mirror consists of two short novels, The Mirror and The Velvet Gentleman. A translation of The Velvet Gentleman was shortlisted in France for the Prix Livres & Musiques. He has also written a writer’s handbook entitled Fiction Writing. His poems have been published in various magazines including Faber & Faber’s First Pressings, Staple, Brand and Magma. For many years, Richard was an Associate Tutor at Goldsmiths College, London, where he taught on the MA Creative & Life Writing.
